Hurricanes Impact Timeshare Resorts

The Atlantic hurricane season is generally considered to last from June 1 through November 30. So far this year, there have been sixteen total storms, six of them major. As can be expected, these hurricanes impact timeshare resorts throughout the U.S. and Caribbean.

Hurricane Image from SatelliteHurricane Irma made landfall in Florida on September 10 after blazing a destructive path through the Carribbean, most notably Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Maarten, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Damage estimates exceed $62.9 billion U.S. dollars with the greater cost of 134 confirmed deaths due to this powerful storm.

On September 18, Hurricane Maria reached Dominica as a Category 5 hurricane. Maria also lashed the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico as a category 4 storm. In all, Maria resulted in 94 confirmed deaths and caused widespread damage across Dominica and Puerto Rico as well as effecting Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe and the US Virgin Islands. Damages are currently estimated at $51.2 billion, although total loses are likely higher.

While this is not a complete list, here are some resorts and areas that are still reporting major damage:

Anguilla – most resorts (including the Four Seasons Resort & Residences Anguilla) are closed.

St. Maarten – most properties suffered significant damage, this includes:

  • Oyster Bay Beach Resort – currently closed
  • Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort & Casino – currently closed
  • Westin Dawn Beach Resort and Spa – closed until further notice

  • Damage from Hurricane IrmaU.S. Virgin Islands – most properties sustained damage, some of it severe including:

  • Westin St. John Resort Villas – currently closed
  • Bluebeard’s Castle Resort – closed until April 1, 2018
  • Marriott’s Frenchman’s Cove Resort – currently closed (possibly reopening in December 2017)
  • The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas – closed to new reservations at this time

  • Puerto Rico – these properties are currently closed:

  • Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve
  • W Retreat & Spa in Vieques
  • Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa

  • In time, the additional impact of these widespread storms will be felt when assessments are made to cover storm damage that might not be covered by insurance. While rising maintenance fees are an issue felt by all timeshare owners, the reality is that many of these resorts have staff who have lost everything, including their jobs. Please visit your resort’s website to see if they are taking donations for staff members who have been affected by the storms. Marriott-Starwood Merger on Track – Plus New Rewards Details

We have been following the proposed MarriottStarwood merger with interest, as these two powerhouse names in the travel industry join forces. At the end of March, the third-party consortium which was led by Anbang Insurance Group pulled their offer, leaving the field clear for Marriott and Starwood to continue with their planned shareholder meetings to approve the deal.
Merger2Both company’s shareholders overwhelmingly approved Marriott’s purchase of Starwood, and the merger is expected to be completed by the middle of this year. One of the biggest questions for the consumer has been what the rewards programs will look like following the merger, as both companies have unique programs for rewards. Marriott has begun to share what their plans are for rewards going forward. For a time, it appears they will attempt to run two parallel programs, until they can complete the integration into one new program for all the brands involved.
Concert hallSome of the elements of the Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) program that Marriott has indicated they are including in their new rewards program will be an Experiences Marketplace, Elite Concierge Service and Guaranteed Late Check-out. The Experiences Marketplace will give Marriott Rewards and The Ritz-Carlton Rewards Members the opportunity to redeem points for special events, including sporting events, theater tickets and other interests. This is expected to be available to existing Marriott Rewards members in late May.
Hotel RoomElite Concierge Service and Guaranteed Late Checkout will be benefits available to elite members of the Marriott Rewards and The Ritz-Carlton Rewards programs. The Elite Concierge Service will match a member with a concierge to help them plan for their “unique needs” before, during and after their stay in a Marriott property. Marriott is planning to make this service available first to an introductory group of Elite U.S. members and expand from there. Guaranteed Late Checkout will launch worldwide on May 16 and is a benefit for current Gold and Platinum Elite Marriott Rewards and The Ritz-Carton Rewards members.
The value of being a rewards member with Marriott has increased with these announcements and should be a relief to those in the Starwood Preferred Guest program. We can’t wait to see how the implementation of these new benefits goes, and will continue to watch the completion of this merger and its effects on the travel and hospitality industry.

Balloons Over Bend and Other Oregon Attractions

oregon-coastHow often do you dream of the mystical Pacific Northwest?

Personally, I think about it all the time. My family used to rent a beach house on the Oregon coast each summer and my sister and I would anxiously look forward to our week on the cool beach and in the majestic mountains.

There are a lot of cool things going on in Oregon all the time, which is another reason it’s such a great place to travel.

20150724_211330_resized_1One such event is the annual Balloons Over Bend festival, which took place last weekend. Premier Timeshare Resale’s own Rachael was even there, celebrating with her family.

This was a special year for the balloon festival. For the last 25 years, healthy family resource, Saving Grace, has thrown a children’s festival, that encourages safe, positive family interactions in the community. This year, Balloons Over Bend paired with the advocates at Saving Grace to throw a bigger children’s festival for the whole family to enjoy.

The weekend consisted of bouncy houses, a dog show, a bike rodeo and more. And they also featured a special LEGO NINJAGO interactive area for kids to play, build, fly and learn more about Saving Grace’s Imagine Life Without Violence program.

A portion of the proceeds from the festival went to support the programs Saving Grace provides the community, such as an emergency shelter, a 24-hour hotline, emergency transportation, safety planning, support groups, children’s advocacy, community education and more.

20150724_211334_resizedAll weekend, families rose with the sun to watch the stunning balloon launches at dawn. Attendees could even witness the magic of Nightglow as glowing balloons took off on Friday night, shining brilliantly against the dark sky.

Bend, Oregon has more to offer than just this exciting annual festival. Like much of Oregon, Bend is an outdoor-lover’s paradise. Mountain biking, rafting, hiking and fishing opportunities abound just minutes from downtown. In the city, the sidewalks are filled with hip patrons sauntering being boutiques and eateries year-round.

While Oregon is a great place to visit in winter if you’re a skier or snowboarder, it is also full of fun summer activities. The outdoor concert venue along the Deschutes River just outside of Bend is a popular spot for artist of any genre to entertain wanting audiences.

Speaking of Deschutes, you’ll find the delicious Deschutes Brewery in Bend, and hundreds of tasty microbreweries scattered throughout Oregon. You’d be remiss to not try a few new brews at one of the many tasting rooms.

portland-oregonIf you haven’t been dreaming about the Pacific Northwest, it’s time to start. And Premier Timeshare Resale can make your Oregon vacation dreams come true. With five timeshare resorts in Bend and 25 total timeshare resorts from Newport to Redmond, our timeshare resale agents can help you find the right property wherever you want to go.

Starwood Vacation Ownership: New Branch Revealed

seaside-resort-chairsAs we talked about in a previous blog, Starwood is making some changes to its structure and inventory. Adding new resorts and expanding their vacation ownership division were big announcements in March, and we’ve been eagerly awaiting more information about these exciting opportunities since.

Well, the wait is (somewhat) over. On Tuesday, Starwood gave us a tantalizing taste of their newest spinoff: Vistana Signature Experiences Inc., which is set to be completed by fourth-quarter 2015, said a news release.

VSE (an acronym of my own design) will be a publicly traded company.

“Today’s filing is a pivotal step toward the planned spin-off of our vacation ownership business, which will allow us to continue participating in the timeshare industry while seeking to create stockholder value for both companies,” said Adam Aron, Starwood’s interim CEO, in a prepared statement on Tuesday.

Summer-bathers-umbrellasThe Starwood spinoff will continue to develop and operate Starwood’s 22 timeshare resorts, including vacation destinations such as Hawaii, Orlando, Mexico and the Caribbean, as well as additional anticipated locations at Westin Los Cabos, Westin Cancun, Westin Puerto Vallarta, Sheraton Kauai, and Sheraton Steamboat-owned properties Starwood expects to transfer.

We plan to follow VSE and Starwood as these resort powerhouses continue to grow. This branch is, if anything, a testament to the growing industry that is vacation ownership.

Are you already on board? Or is it time for you to invest the most valuable thing of all, getaways and quality time?
