Covering over 1,200 square miles of the Sierra Nevada of California, Yosemite National Park is one of the nation’s most popular tourist attractions. Well known for its picturesque waterfalls, Yosemite offers visitors so much more. With glacial carved terrain and the world’s tallest granite monolith there is plenty to see and explore in this gorgeous park.
Yosemite is lush with historic sites, museums, and even cemeteries. At the Yosemite Museum you can view historical artifacts of the native Yosemite people from 1850 to the present. There are examples of basket weaving, bead work, and cultural games. Behind the museum you can visit the reconstructed Indian Village of Awahnee. Across the street from the museum the Yosemite Cemetery is a resting place to Native Americans, and those who had an important role in developing the park, as well as casual park visitors. A guide to the cemetery is available to borrow from the Valley Visitor Center.
Yosemite National Park is home to many beautiful waterfalls. Ribbon Falls can be seen from the road as you enter the Yosemite Valley. Horsetail Falls, which looks to be ablaze during sunsets, can be seen from the El Capitan Picnic area, as it flows from the east side of said mountain. Perhaps the most famous waterfall and one of the highest in the world, Yosemite falls can be seen from many places around the park. Around Yosemite Valley and Yosemite Valley Lodge are great views without the strain of a hike, but for a breathtaking view, there is an all day trail that leads to the top of the falls.
These are just a few of the things to see and do at Yosemite National Park. The park is open year round, though due to snow, some roads are closed during the winter months. From hiking, horseback riding, water activities like kayaking and fishing, art galleries and exploring culture, year round the park will never disappoint.
